William B. Solomon, Jr. joined Ally Financial in 1999 to serve as general counsel; he was named group vice president in 2004. In this role, he has responsibility for providing all legal services to Ally through the oversight of outside counsel and an 80-member legal staff. Solomon is also responsible for the secretary’s office, the licensing department and the organization’s record and information management activity.

Prior to joining Ally, Solomon was an attorney and practice area manager for General Motors Corp. from 1988 to 1999, where he had responsibility for commercial lending activities. From 1985 to 1988, Solomon was the general counsel for Vixen Motor Company in Pontiac, Mich., and from 1980 to 1985 he worked as a regional staff attorney at Ford Motor Credit Company. Solomon began his legal career with a two-year clerkship on the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Born Jan. 8, 1953 in Detroit, Solomon received his bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Detroit in 1973 with honors and a master’s degree in political science from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario in 1974 with honors. Solomon received his juris doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in 1978.

Solomon has studied political science in London and Budapest and has lectured in Bratislava, Weisbaden and Madrid on commercial lending, bankruptcy and workouts. He has also published two articles: Solomon and Mossburg: Co-Signer Requirements Under the FTC Fair Credit Practices Rule, Summer 1982, Consumer Fin. L.Q. Rep.; and Solomon, Proposed Consumer Revision to Article 9 of the UCC, 1997 D.C.L. Law Rev., 1087. Solomon is a member of the Michigan Bar and American Bar Associations.
