Tom Callahan

Tom Callahan was named president of Ally Insurance in August 2010. Callahan is responsible for global insurance operations, both U.S. and international operations, including Car Care Plan Ltd., ABA Seguros and Shanghai First Response.

Prior to his current leadership position, Callahan served as executive vice president of Dealer Product & Services group of North American operations since 2006. In this role, he was responsible for leading all of the organization’s finance & insurance (F&I) and dealer-facing property & casualty (P&C) administration and operations.

Previously, Callahan was responsible for marketing, product development and administration of the General Motors Protection Plan business and the management of claims activities throughout the corporation. Callahan joined Ally Insurance in Detroit as vice president of claims in 1994. He was promoted to senior vice president of claims in 1997.

Callahan began his insurance career in 1977 at Allstate Insurance in Atlanta, and eventually moved to Fairfax, Va., to assume the position of district manager. In 1984, Callahan joined Crum & Forster Insurance in Dallas as regional claim manager, and was later promoted to vice president of claims at its Durham, N.C., offices. He joined Republic Financial Services as regional vice president in Dallas in 1990, where he had complete operational responsibility for Republic’s largest region.

Callahan was born on July 11, 1952, in Norwalk, Conn. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Notre Dame in 1974. He also earned a juris doctorate degree in 1977 from the University of Connecticut Law School. In 1998, Callahan completed the Stanford Executive Program. Callahan is currently a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the Connecticut Bar. Callahan is an active supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and participates in low-income home building and improvement projects.
